Mothman - Movie Review. Being from WV, the Mothman is a legend I am fond of. After seeing the Mothman Prophecies, I traveled to Point Pleasant to check out the source of the legend, I toured the town, and visited the Mothman Museum and even took part in the 2008 Mothman Festival for which I created some custom illustration. So I came across "Mothman" in my local Redbox and decided to check it out. Also the fact that Jewel Staite is in the film didnt hurt. I have been a fan of hers since Firefly and Stargate Atlantis. 


Ok, the film is based in the town of Point Pleasant WV, although I am pretty sure it was'nt filmed there. I wish the few films that are based in West Virginia would actually be filmed there, but oh well. The film starts off pretty cliche, with a "I know what you did last summer" opening. It also takes from the Mothman Prophecies with a reporter from DC traveling to Point Pleasant. Then it travels along typical made for TV horror cliches, a Harbinger of Death crying everyones demise, a book of creepy drawings, a haunted old mil straight out of Scooby Doo, and terrible 3D effects...down right awful. 


But the film does have a few saving graces, one is the incorporation of the real Chief Cornstalk legend, which was a Native American chief who was murdered in Point Pleasant who cursed the area, and has been tied to the Mothman Man myth. Most made for TV horror films would have used the Mothman name only, but the writers actually did some research which I thought helped the film. I only wish the CGI would have been, this could have been a better film. 


The film starts off weak but ends stronger.
